A hen party cake planning timeline
- Eight to twelve weeks out: confirm numbers and the venue, and find out whether the venue allows an indoor ice fountain. Restaurants and private dining rooms very often do not. Rented houses and cottages usually have no policy at all, which means it is your call and your smoke alarm.
- Three to four weeks out: order the topper. We make it to order, dispatch in one to three working days, and tracked UK delivery takes four to seven — so three weeks is comfortable and two is fine if nothing goes wrong.
- One to two weeks out: order or book the cake. Supermarket celebration cakes can be collected on the day; an independent baker will usually want a fortnight for anything decorated.
- Two days out: buy the ice fountain. Supermarkets and party shops stock them in the candle aisle. We do not sell them, so this one is on your list rather than ours.
- On the day: topper on at the last minute, in the kitchen, out of sight.
What size cake for how many hens?
A rough rule that holds up: a 6-inch round gives about twelve dessert portions, an 8-inch about twenty-four, a 10-inch about forty. Hens tend to eat cake late in the evening after a substantial dinner, so err smaller than instinct suggests — leftover cake in a rented house on the last morning is nobody's friend.
The topper is around 15 cm wide, so it looks best from a 7-inch cake upwards; on a 6-inch it will overhang slightly. If you are ordering from a bakery, tell them a 15 cm topper is going on top, so they do not pipe a tall decoration straight into the middle of the space you need.
Making the cake moment actually work
Lights down, everyone behind the person carrying it, and one nominated photographer rather than eleven. An ice fountain burns for well under a minute, so decide who is filming before it is lit and not during. Shoot from slightly above and behind the bride's shoulder if you want the faces of the room in frame, and from the front if you want her reaction.
The safety part is short and firm. An adult lights it, the cake stays on the table while it burns, and nothing hangs above it — no bunting, no balloon arch, no paper lanterns, which are precisely the things hen-party decorating involves. Never carry a cake with a lit fountain in it. Let it burn out completely, wait a moment for the tube to cool, then lift the topper off before anyone cuts.
Afterwards the topper is the bride's. It washes clean, it does not crumple or go soft the way card does, and it is a considerably better thing to hand over at the end of the weekend than a deflating balloon.
