Details

A football with their name arced across it and their age below, on a base solid enough to survive a table of eight-year-olds leaning in. There are no club crests, badges or kit logos anywhere on it, and that is deliberate: we do not print other people's trademarks. Choose whichever of the ten colours sits closest to the kit they wear and everybody gets the message.

Personalisation is free. Type the name and the age exactly as you want them, whether that is Ethan 10 or ETHAN 10, and that is precisely what gets printed. We do not correct spelling or capitals, so give it a second read before you order. The width stays at about 15 cm (6 in); longer names make it a touch taller.

Behind the ball is a socket moulded into the base for a standard upright cake fountain, the ice fountain type from the supermarket. The cake comes out, the fountain goes up, and for half a minute the kitchen sounds like a stadium.

  • The fountain is not included and we do not sell them.
  • It is a firework, so an adult lights it and stays with it, following the instructions on the packet. Upright cake fountains only, never a thin handheld sparkler.

Each one is 3D printed to order in PLA, a rigid plant-based plastic, in our studio in Spain. Ten colours in all: black, grey, blue, pink, purple, yellow and four rainbow blends coded RGP, RBG, RYB and BBP. It is not edible, so it lifts off before the cake is cut, and then it generally ends up on a bedroom shelf next to the medals.

The panels on the ball are modelled in relief rather than printed on flat, so it still looks like a ball from the side as well as head-on. That is the bit that makes it worth photographing next to the actual boots.

Questions about this topper

Can you print a club badge or team logo on it?

No. Club crests, badges and kit designs are trademarks and we do not reproduce them. What we can do is print any name and age you like in a colour close to their team, which reads exactly the same way across a room and keeps everybody out of trouble.

How do I write the name and the age?

Type both into the personalisation box in the format you want to see, for example Ethan 10. We print it exactly as typed, capitals and all, and we do not change spelling or spacing. Check it once more before ordering, because personalised items are not returnable unless they are faulty.

Is the cake fountain included?

No, the topper is the holder only. Buy a standard upright cake fountain, labelled ice fountain in most UK supermarkets and party shops, and slot it into the base. It has to be the upright cone or cylinder type that fires sparks straight up, never a thin handheld sparkler.

Can a cake fountain be used at a children's party?

Only with an adult holding the reins. Use an indoor upright cake fountain, light it yourself, follow the instructions on the packet and keep the children a good arm's length back while it burns. Never hand it to a child and never leave it lit and unattended, even for a second.

Can it go on next year's cake too?

Yes, if the age still fits. It is rigid printed plastic rather than card, so it does not curl in the fridge or tear when it comes off the cake. Wipe it, dry it, and it goes on a shelf with the trophies until you need it again.

What size cake does it need?

It is about 15 cm (6 in) wide, so it fills the top of a 6 in cake almost edge to edge and sits centred with room to spare on an 8 in or bigger one. The base is a flat bar, not spikes, so set buttercream, fondant or a cake board all give it grip.
