A gingerbread man straight from the Christmas baking tray: a light brown, lightly speckled body with a white icing outline all round, wavy icing on the arms and legs, two dark eyes, a red smile and two red buttons on his tummy. The hanging loop with its white string sits on top of his head. From the front he is an ordinary, friendly tree ornament – which is exactly the point.
The trick is on the back. A printed sleeve runs up the white reverse of the body, open at the top, so the note peeks out behind his head. Roll the note, slide it in from the top, done: from the front all anyone sees is the motif, and the money only appears when the ornament comes off the tree. Any euro note fits, several rolled together too, and so does a rolled paper voucher – a rigid plastic gift card does not.
Who is it for? Everyone who answers the what-would-you-like question with "oh, just give me money" and still deserves something to unwrap: the grandchild, the nephew saving for his driving licence, the colleague in the office Secret Santa, the neighbour who takes in your parcels all year. Questions about this topper
How does the money go in?
There is a sleeve printed onto the back, open at the top. Roll the note lengthways, slide it in from the top, and it sits firmly enough not to slip out while the ornament hangs. To take it out, just pull it by the end that shows. None of this is visible from the front.
Which banknotes fit – and does a voucher?
Every euro note fits, from a five to a two hundred, and several notes rolled together too. A paper voucher fits as well if you roll it like a note. A rigid plastic gift card in credit-card format does not fit the sleeve – better to lay that alongside.
Does the gingerbread man suit adults too?
Yes. Of all our money-holder ornaments, the gingerbread man is the most neutral motif: no child's face, no bow, no hat – just the figure everyone knows from the Christmas baking tray. It works for a grandchild as well as for a colleague in the Secret Santa or your mother-in-law. If you are giving to a couple or to siblings, the gingerbread girl is the matching counterpart.
Can I keep using the ornament after Christmas?
Yes, that is the whole idea. The money comes out and gets spent; the ornament stays on the tree or goes into the decorations box and comes out again next year. PLA is a rigid plastic that simply wipes clean. And if you like, you refill the sleeve next December.
